2008 Overlook PTO Meeting Minutes

 

Meeting minutes of Wednesday, April 30th, 2008.

Meeting was called to order at 7:10 PM by Melanie Holloway, President. First order of business was to approve the minutes for April 30, 2008. Motion made by Jeanne and seconded by Bonnie to approve minutes. Motion was approved by all. 

Principal’s report was presented by Brenda Houle, Principal. Kudos’ to our guidance department for being so pro-active and not waiting for problems to arise. The Simplex programs went well. Students have begun to report destructive and inappropriate behavior.  

Eight Orange toured Oakmont today and were very well behaved. Gregg Smith, ORHS Vice-Principal called to say how impressed he was with the students. Speaks well of the staff at Overlook. Eight White touring tomorrow.

May 8th is the SOAR Banquet at the Colonial Hotel. 

The new phone system is up and running with four lines and voice mail. Teachers now have access to make a local call from the classroom. 

May 29th is High Five Training all day to improve team building sponsored by a donation from Simplex.

Two Russian boys were shadowing at Overlook and staying in the home of Gary and Shelly Dion. They are members of the Red Army Hockey Team and were here to play in a hockey tournament. 

Staff Appreciation will be held on May 30th. Wendy Maillet has agreed to chair the event. She will be looking for help so anyone interested please contact her. 

Li’l Caesar’s fundraiser will be discussed at the next meeting. Jeanne made the motion and Paula seconded to do this as a fundraiser for next fall. Motion approved by all. 

Grade 8 Honors Night/Dance will be held on Monday, June 16th. The program will begin at 6:00 PM with the dance to follow from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Chaperones are needed for the dance, preferably not parents of eighth graders.  

Tuesday, June 17th will be the Ice Cream Social for all grades with cookies and brownies and all the fixing’s. June 18th is the rain date. June 19th is the last day of school and SOAR Day. 

Scholarships for the eighth grade class trip have been approved for a total of $270.00. The motion was made by Gail and seconded by Melanie to approve the $270.00 and blanket an approval of more if needed for other students. Motion approved by all. The trip is scheduled for June 10th.  

Paula O’Brien, Treasurer, gave us an update of funds in the PTO account. Approval to pay $600.00 for the DJ from all three dances and $2450.00 towards agendas for next year was made. Gail made a motion to approve treasurer’s report and was seconded by Melanie. Motion approved by all.

PTO Board positions are available. Melanie will be stepping down as President and Jeanne as Vice President. As always, all positions are available if someone is interested.

Voting will be at next months meeting.

PTO has agreed to pay for postage for the last Newsletter to be mailed home to parents and also to include being mailed to the 5th graders. Should be mailed home during the week of May 20th. Gail made the motion to pay for postage and Jeanne seconded. All approved. 

Jeanne made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Motion seconded by Melanie and approved by all. Meeting adjourned at 8:10 PM.

OMS/PTO MEETING

Meeting minutes of Wednesday, March 26, 2008.

Meeting was called to order at 7:05 PM by Melanie Holloway, President. First order of business was to approve the minutes for February 27, 2008 with a correction made about the SOAR banquet. The Colonial Hotel has waived the down payment for the hall (Nikki and John Moorshead) and the Lions Clubs from both Ashburnham and Westminster have donated $1,000. Motion made by Jeanne and seconded by Linda to approve minutes with the correction. Motion was approved by all.

There was no treasurer’s report due to Paula being absent. 

Dr. Zapantis and Laura Weiderman attended the PTO meeting to bring the members up to date with the school budget. They are collecting information and suggestions from the PTO, PTA, OOMPA, School Council and all other school related groups and organizations as to what should be in the school budget, what is a fair override figure and what amounts should be charged for sports fees. They handed out the school committee regular meeting of March 18, 2008 agenda and enclosures and also a summary overview of budget options. 

Questions regarding the refunds of the once mandatory, then not, $50.00 activity fee, may be made by calling Sherry at Central Office. 

Principal’s report was presented by Brenda Houle, Principal. Simplex has donated a grant in the amount of $5,000 to run Deana’s Theatre Performances. Grade 7 & 8 grade girls: “Girl Chat”     Grade 7 & 8 grade boys: “Step Up”     Grade 6: “Doing the Right Thing” 

On April 3rd, Dodging Destructive Decisions, sponsored by LUK, to be presented at ORHS. 

Grades close on April 4th and report cards issued on April 11th. District Band Night to take place at ORHS on April 17th.

Staff Appreciation will be held on the half day of May 30th.  Looking for a chairperson and a possible theme.

Agenda’s will again be put on next month’s agenda. Also the discussion of a possible BBQ or Ice Cream Social. 

A motion was made by Melanie to award an 8th grade scholarship of $120.00 for the class trip. Motion seconded by Linda and approved by all. 

On Friday, March 28th, the family of Rachel Lee will be presented with a check from the students at OMS to help defray the cost of fuel to travel back and forth to Boston for medical treatments. Have Caitlyn from the Journal available for a photo shoot and interview. 

Eight Orange will tour ORHS on April 30th and Eight White will tour on May 1st

Meeting was called to order at 7:10 PM by Melanie Holloway, President. First order of business was to approve the minutes for January 23, 2008 with a correction made to “basketball season is underway not baseball season”. Motion made by Jeanne and seconded by Paula to approve minutes. Motion was approved by all. 

Treasurer’s report was given by Paula. Nikki made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report and was seconded by Linda. Motion was approved by all.  

Nikki and Linda are coordinating the 8th grade dance. Forty tickets have been sold so far with one day left to sell. Tickets must be bought in advance. No tickets will be sold on dance day. Twelve chaperones and sixteen bakers have been lined up. Donielle and Chris Thompson have made a Frito donation. Thank you Thompson’s.  Nikki is picking up Valentine decorations for the Valentine themed dance. A group of eighth graders will help to decorate the cafeteria before the dance. Students will check in after 2:00 in the Team Room before proceeding to the dance area. 

Principal’s report was presented by Brenda Houle, Principal. The SOAR Banquet is being held at The Colonial Hotel and the hall is being donated by Nikki and John Moorshead. Thank you. 

The Lion’s Club Pancake Breakfast to benefit Overlook Middle School is being held at the Westminster VFW on Sunday, March 16th from 8:00 to 11:00 AM. 

The School Library Bookmark Contest results are in. The three winners to represent Overlook Middle School at the state level are Emma Wang and Hayley Barry, grade 7 and Jade Chauvin, grade 8. Congratulations to all who participated. 

The newsletter will have info on cyber bullying. Parents should talk to their children about what they are doing on line and who they are talking to online. 

Eighth graders will be seeing a video on Signs of Suicide (SOS) through a grant. They will learn to acknowledge, care and tell a grown-up if they suspect someone in trouble. 

Sometime in April, a bullying and teasing program, donated by Simplex, will be shown. 

On March 6th, a meeting on the eighth grade field trip will be held. Chaperones will be one adult to ten students. Teachers are expected to go part of the day, during the regular school hours. Desperately need parent chaperones. The field trip is scheduled for June 10th.

Eighth grade graduation is tentatively scheduled for Monday, June 16th. The graduation dance will be in the evening. Tentatively, the last day of school for all schools is a half day on June 18th.  

Agenda’s for next year will be tabled again until we have more info and a price. 

Staff appreciation is scheduled for Friday, May 30th. June Deerborne may be interested in chairing this event. 

Possibly holding a school wide BBQ sponsored by PTO has been discussed. More discussion at the next meeting.

Brian Beaudoin’s dad, Joseph, made the wooden container in the foyer for an info center to hold flyers and newsletters. Thank you Joseph. PTO would like to give Joseph $50.00 for the materials used to make the container. Melanie made the motion to approve $50.00 and Paula seconded. The motion was approved by all. 

On Saturday, March 29, 2008, there will be the 7th Annual Hockey Benefit Game for a family in need at Cushing’s Iorio Arena. This year the proceeds will benefit the family of Rachel Lee. Tickets are $5.00 and recommended to purchase in advance. 

PTO has decided to not have a spring fundraiser this year. Ideas need to be decided for a fall fundraiser as soon as possible.

Meeting was called to order at 7:05 by Jeanne Erickson, Vice-President. First order of business was a motion made by Jeanne to approve the minutes for November 28, 2007. Motion was seconded by Paula and approved by all.

Principal’s report was presented by Brenda Houle, Principal. Committee was updated on the donated phone equipment. Ken Burstall was the gentleman who generously donated the equipment. Once installed, all four lines will be able to utilize voice mail. Messages will also be able to be left for teachers in their rooms. Hopefully up and running within the year. 

Becky Pilsbury will continue to work on the spread sheet for the next go round of SWAP. This has been a huge help. Thank you again Becky. The SWAP that ran the food donations in December was a huge success. This year food pantries have needed help more than before. Thank you to all that donated and to Brenda Brown for all her help. 

The pizza party for Mrs. Shattuck and Mrs. Bottomley’s homerooms for Lil Caesar’s pizza sales was a success. Nikki had the Colonial cook and deliver the pizza ready for consumption by our hungry students. Students were thankful and enjoyed the treat.

NAEP (National Assessment of Education Progress), sponsored by the Federal Government, will take place on February 6, 2008 in the subjects of Math, Reading and Science. Science lab will be available all morning. 

A Youth Risk Behavior survey from the Federal Gov. has been sent home to all eigth graders. Survey is on health, drugs and alcohol and risky behavior.

A para-professional is being hired to assist boys in the locker room. Up until this point, boys had to stay in their smelly, sweaty clothes after gym class because there was no one that could supervise the boys locker room. This is a much appreciated position.  

Having been mandated to perform security drills and evacuation drills, one was done with the staff in the fall. One will be done with the students when the weather is warmer and drier. Also being planned is a “sheltering in place” procedure for keeping students at the school in case of an emergency. Plans for snacks to have on hand in the kitchen and activities to do with the students are being discussed. 

The level three sex offender was banned from Mt. Wachusett ski area and a connect ed was performed to each home in the district. Please talk to your child about strangers. 

Basketball season is underway and going well. The boys are having fun and the girls are doing exceptionally well.

Dates for the dances have had to be changed due to conflicts with the gym. Dances will be held after school from 2:15 until 4:00. Parents are to pick their child up promptly at 4:00. February 29th is the 8th grade dance. The theme is Valentine’s Day. March 28th is the 7th grade dance and the theme is St. Paddy’s Day. May 2nd is the 6th grade dance and a theme is to be determined. Ten chaperones are needed for each dance. Nikki Moorshead is the chairperson for the dances. She can be contacted at 978-874-1640. Linda Barrows has volunteered to help sign up chaperones. She can be contacted at 978-874-7933. 

School store volunteers are needed from 10:45 until noon. Please contact the office. 

Anyone that has paid the $50.00 activity fee, that was mandatory and then wasn’t mandatory, is advised to contact the superintendent’s office with questions and concerns. 

Deanne Smith has volunteered to collect the used ink cartridges and send them out to the appropriate facility for reimbursement. Thank you Deanne. 

Gail made a motion for the PTO to pay for postage to mail the next newsletter home for parents. Dance info and MCAS dates and info will be included. Nikki seconded the motion and all approved.

Treasurer’s report was given by Paula. In lieu of teacher’s gifts, the King Family made a donation of $25.00. Thank you Bob, Diane and Nolan. Nikki made a motion to approve the treasurer’s report and was seconded by Linda. Motion was approved by all. 

Nikki made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Motion seconded by Linda and approved by all. Meeting adjourned at 8:40 PM.
